Task 6 - What have your learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Our initial interactions with technology began with the use of the camera within our shooting day. All of this is detailed in one of the initial blogs that I wrote during the development of our preliminary task. Due to our knowledge of using camera equiptment, the development in camera technology came with the innovation in the way one can use the camera to produce more create shots. For example, we used the mini van to produce a tracking shot of our protagonist running. This was a concept we would have never considering with in the initial stages of technology use in the preliminary task. Furthermore the technological advancement of our work became very apparent when returning to the Edit Suite, in order to begin the process of editing within post production.

As one of the main partakers in the editing process of my group, I discovered new and innovative ways to develop the product post production through use of technology.

Firstly I furthered my knowledge of Final Cut Pro, past the simple cutting of sequence that was developed in the Preliminary task. Below I have attatched a simple annotated version of a Final Cut Pro window that I created to explain my developments more fluently.

Here are explainations to correlate with the development of my use of technology; The number above match with the descriptions below.
1) Timeline.
The time line is where you cut and put together the sequence of your product. When cutting videos on the timeline it is imperitive that you cut on the same motion take so that the cutting seems like a continuous sequence as apposed to the audience seeing the product as though they have missed 2-3 seconds of a sequence. There are layers on the timeline that stand for different things. You, therefore, have the ability to layer various media and sounds to create a different outcome for your piece. The timeline is the most useful way to cut individual sounds into your product because you have the ability to layer different sounds to create individual sounds that correlate perfectly with your piece. Also the timeline allows one to experiment with different cuts without disturbing the original piece. Furthermore you have the ability to block strips of the timeline to see the piece, for example, without ambient sound or a soundtrack.

2) The File Store.
The file store allows you to store pieces of your shot sequence to either add later or cut into shorter pieces to edit into the sequence. This originates with the log bin, when you originally get your rush tape (the final out come of your products from your shooting day) you must log the shots that you want to cut together in the final piece. You then place them in the log bin (2a on the diagram), which is where you are able to access them through out your editing process. Finally in the File Store area you should develop a Sound bin. This is an area where you store the first cuts of your ambiant sound, your sound track, diagetic and nondiagetic sound. From here you are able to layer the sound to create unique, personalized sound that idealy correlates with your product.

3)View A.
This where you see what you have edited so far, you can watch through what you have created in order to understand your sequence so far, and to identify flaws in your editing.

4) View B.
This is where you are able to see what you are editing. You cut titles and shot changes with in this frame. You are able to layer titles and give them motion within this window. You can do this through the 3 tabs at the top of View Frame B, through these tabs you can also fade out pieces of your film and speed up specific areas. Therefore you have the ability to edit your sequence as you are watching it.

Task 5 - How did you attract/address your audience?

After we decided on our target demographic we needed to develop research into ways we would attract them. The fact we were dealing with males between the ages of 16-25, we needed to appeal to the male themes that would cause them to be instinctually responsive.

We decided these themes would revolve around the two themes that are connected to the central interests of males. Women and Violence.

In our piece we used our female antagonist to attract a wider male audience. The stereotypical charactaristics of our actress proved to be the most common attraction to our demographic. Our female antagonists blonde hair and "banging body" (as quoted by a male viewer) are features that would undoubtable cause a rise in interest for the demographic, as opposed to having a 70 year old woman jogging down the street.

We decided another central theme was violence. We can see from our piece that we merge the two instinctually attractive male themes and blur them to become one theme. The violence is being inflicted on the female antagonist. However the type of violence as well, is also what appeals to the male demographic. From the screen grabs below we can see how the violence is used to appeal to our audience. The fact that the male is viewed in shots that cause him to look powerful appeal to the male ego.

Task 4 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

This media product would appeal to very small demographic. It would be appealing more to an audience of horror film lovers, who sustain a respect for independent film. The age group could be summated between 16 – 30, however due to the age restrictions of viewing this film the age group would have to be put higher to 18. Also the relevance of gender is extremely necessary in the development of this piece because this film is aimed almost purely at a male audience, just due to the amount of physical violence and gore that is directed shown in the piece. Although these facts allow us to draw simple conclusions, the idealistic profile of our viewer needs to be developed into a more specific persona.

I would suggest that the ideal model for the consumer of our film would be profiled as a 19-year-old male, whose interests involve computer gaming, educational success and a very limited social interaction with the female sex. They would access this movie either through a friend suggestion or lurking around internet forums for interesting independent media.

Due to further interest in this question, I conducted small interviews to see if my hypothesis was correct. (However pictures will not be disclosed due to the embarrassment of fitting the explanation above.)

Questionnaires:
Name: James
Age: 17
Interests: Computer games, Hockey and Food.
Questions:
After the explanation of our film, would you be interested in seeing it? If yes, Why?
Yes, because it seems entertaining.
Upon first impressions, would you be interested in buying the film on DVD?
Depends how much it costs.
Would you go to the cinema and see this with your friends? If no, Why?
Most likely not, because I prefer to watch movies at home.

Name: Tom
Age: 18
Interests: Football, Girls and WOW
Questions:
After the explanation of our film, would you be interested in seeing it? If yes, Why?
Yes, the storyline seems interesting and could develop well.
Upon first impressions, would you be interested in buying the film on DVD?
If the cover was interesting and the blurb was cool, then I would. But I would probably just download it.
Would you go to the cinema and see this with your friends? If no, Why?
No, because I would rather take a girl to the cinema. And she doesn’t want to see a horror film.

Name: Kramer
Age: 16
Interests: Computer games, Music Editing and Reading
Questions:
After the explanation of our film, would you be interested in seeing it? If yes, Why?
Definitely, the film seems like a very cool idea and the actors seem very good.
Upon first impressions, would you be interested in buying the film on DVD?
I would be interested because I want to know about the rest of the movie and how the storyline pans out.
Would you go to the cinema and see this with your friends? If no, Why?
Yes, I would. My friends and I would find this film very interesting and entertaining.

From these questionnaires my hypothesis was confirmed. The 1st and 3rd questionnaires followed the stereotype that those interested in computer games and introverted activities would be interested in our film. Although the target audience is small, the film concept is strong enough to be able to become a popular film within its own respective audience. Its strong story line, and character development appeals to those of an older age group, and its content of a lot of blood and gore appeals to a younger predominantly male audience. In conclusion, the media audience for this product would not necessarily be wide but it would however be a very loyal fan base.

Task 3 - What kind of Media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Through group discussion and debate, through out the development of our piece, we decided it was imperative that our group agreed on the kind of financial backing and institution that would produce and have interest in our film concept. This decision was so important because the choice sets up the initial outlines and ideas of the target demographic and the stylistic approach for the film. A high budget film, due to the exceptional amount of money being filtered through production, would have to appeal to a very large age group and most likely both genders. However, an independent film is not produced to ensure an impressive fiscal return; it is produced to create an impressive narrative that appeals to the set demographic.

In saying this, I would assume that our media product would be of low production values, and the type of Production Company that would back our work would be that of a smaller more personalized group of investors that would sustain the low budget production of our small concept thriller. The likely hood of appeal to a higher budget run film production company would be very minimal due to the reminiscence that our thriller dwells within. It is very much based on the successful work of other great, iconic directors and their classic horror iconography. Therefore, we would have to pull on more artistically supportive investors - those who support the idea and those who are interested in more independent film making. The lack of CGI affects panoramic views and a smaller, unknown cast would definitely define our production as small independent institutional media production. However, the in-depth development of meaning and character based story line would undoubtedly categorize our production as an independent film production.

Upon analysis of the “The British Independent Film Awards” website, we are presented with various different financial backers. The benefactors of 2009 include companies from Film London, to MAC cosmetics, to Soho House London. From this analysis I have come to conclude that in order to produce a low budget independent film, one must seek various different forms of financial support. Unlike cash rich production company investors, in Hollywood – Independent media must seek their monetary means through various and unique sources of support.

This, therefore, links neatly to the work on our Independent Horror film. We must, as a group, look at decisions upon who we want to invest in our work, represent our product and furthermore attach our name too.

Task 2 - How does your product represent particular social groups?

It is apparent from the construction of social stereotypes within our piece that the correlation with particular social groups would be prevailent. Intially the concept of attaching a social group to our product was difficult because our media product was aimed to appeal to wide range of male viewers. However, upon deaper relfection it became apparent that there are two main social groups that are represented with in our piece.

The Vulnerable Female

From the above screen grab we can see that the traditional vulnerability and physical weakness of a female is used to exploit the emotions and fears of women watching this piece. When the youth of a girl is taken advantage of, it is more likely to be relatable to the female audience. The common media of news and newspapers uses this technique frequently to attach soical occurances to social groups.

The Powerful Male

Furthermore we are presented with 2 powerful male figures. In the patriarchy that we exist within today the development of power within a male character is something that is a very successful technique to attract a male audience. Furthermore the steroetypes that exist in our product, not only relate to the power of a man but also the nationalities that would charactaristically be considered as "criminals".

Account of the Shooting Day!

Last minute preparations for the shoot day?
We conviened, as to our shooting shedual, at 9am to confirm we were all prepared for the shoot. When we met we ensured that we had completed our props list and that our cast was prepared for the shoot. The last minute preparations for the shoot day were our sourcing of the fake blood and the change of costume decision. For the costume we changed her from wearing a hoodie, to just wearing a plain tank top.
We, therefore, in our preparation made sure we had the correct equiptment. Our equiptment list is ordered as followed -
· 1 x Sony PDR 170 Min DV Cam (Plus 2x Batteries)
· 2 x Mini DV Cam Tape Stock
· 1 x XLR Lead
· 1 x Boom Pole
· 1 x Sennheiser Directional Microphone
· 2 x Red Head Video Lights and Tripods
· 1 x Fluid Head Tripod (inc. Horseshoe)
· 2 x AA Batteries
· 1 x Suspension Unit
· 1 x Rycote Softie
Throught out the shooting day we utalized all of our created planning materials to ensure that we were on target and we wouldn't waste time. We used everything that we created (as detailed in the blog below), however our shooting schedual was something that was overthought. We could have used it much more effectively to sustain a more fluid shooting motion throughout the day.
Due to the factor of cirrcumstance we had to change our plans during the shoot day so therefore, we removed our first shot from our story board for practical and timing reasons, this was to make sure that our day didn't run over time and that once we returned to the edit suite we didn't have an excessive amount of material to log. Also we planned on using a lot of blood within our final shot, however upon further thought we found it unnecessary and unrealistic to have that amount of blood due to our desire to create as much realism as possible within the piece.

There were various high points through out the day and this saw the development of team morale and creativity to be exploited. The innovation of one our team members saw us shooting inside the van. We moved our camera into the van and drove past our female protagonist to create a more smooth flow of sequence to cut into our final log.

Although our group worked productively through out most of the day we did have minor down falls that affected the outcome of our final piece, and ultimately our success. On the shoot day it was imperitive that we stuck to our shooting schedual, however due to our creative excelleration we found that once on location it was difficult to stay on task due to the stream of ideas we kept developing while on location. If were were to have the ability to shoot again, I would suggest that we stick more closely to our shooting schedual in order to work more efficently.

The Development of The Folder - Shooting Schedual

In order to sustain a fluid and productive shooting day it was imperitive to create a coherant shooting schedual, this will be an enormus aid to us on the shooting day. In creating this document we built a cohesive plan of acton to sustain our focus on the day of the shoot.

The Development of The Folder - Equitment List

The equitment list was confirmed entirely by the production supervisor who assited us with our shoot. He talked us thoroughly through the production day and I listed the necessities that were required to fulfill our story board. We also created this document to have a form of a check list for our shooting day to ensure we do not leave essential pieces of equiptment behind, in doing this we also saved ourselves from wasting time having to return to school to pick up left equitment.

The Development of The Folder - Prop List

Due to the prevailence of dramatic beating within our piece the props that we had were the key to ensuring realism and assuring that our shots looked believable.
We made our final decisions based on our story board;
  1. An Ipod
  2. Rope
  3. Duct Tape
  4. Gloves
  5. A Car
  6. A Chair
  7. Power Tools
  8. A Table
  9. A Table cloth
  10. Fake blood
  11. Kitchen Knifes
