Task 4 - Who would be the audience for your media product?

This media product would appeal to very small demographic. It would be appealing more to an audience of horror film lovers, who sustain a respect for independent film. The age group could be summated between 16 – 30, however due to the age restrictions of viewing this film the age group would have to be put higher to 18. Also the relevance of gender is extremely necessary in the development of this piece because this film is aimed almost purely at a male audience, just due to the amount of physical violence and gore that is directed shown in the piece. Although these facts allow us to draw simple conclusions, the idealistic profile of our viewer needs to be developed into a more specific persona.

I would suggest that the ideal model for the consumer of our film would be profiled as a 19-year-old male, whose interests involve computer gaming, educational success and a very limited social interaction with the female sex. They would access this movie either through a friend suggestion or lurking around internet forums for interesting independent media.

Due to further interest in this question, I conducted small interviews to see if my hypothesis was correct. (However pictures will not be disclosed due to the embarrassment of fitting the explanation above.)

Questionnaires:
Name: James
Age: 17
Interests: Computer games, Hockey and Food.
Questions:
After the explanation of our film, would you be interested in seeing it? If yes, Why?
Yes, because it seems entertaining.
Upon first impressions, would you be interested in buying the film on DVD?
Depends how much it costs.
Would you go to the cinema and see this with your friends? If no, Why?
Most likely not, because I prefer to watch movies at home.

Name: Tom
Age: 18
Interests: Football, Girls and WOW
Questions:
After the explanation of our film, would you be interested in seeing it? If yes, Why?
Yes, the storyline seems interesting and could develop well.
Upon first impressions, would you be interested in buying the film on DVD?
If the cover was interesting and the blurb was cool, then I would. But I would probably just download it.
Would you go to the cinema and see this with your friends? If no, Why?
No, because I would rather take a girl to the cinema. And she doesn’t want to see a horror film.

Name: Kramer
Age: 16
Interests: Computer games, Music Editing and Reading
Questions:
After the explanation of our film, would you be interested in seeing it? If yes, Why?
Definitely, the film seems like a very cool idea and the actors seem very good.
Upon first impressions, would you be interested in buying the film on DVD?
I would be interested because I want to know about the rest of the movie and how the storyline pans out.
Would you go to the cinema and see this with your friends? If no, Why?
Yes, I would. My friends and I would find this film very interesting and entertaining.

From these questionnaires my hypothesis was confirmed. The 1st and 3rd questionnaires followed the stereotype that those interested in computer games and introverted activities would be interested in our film. Although the target audience is small, the film concept is strong enough to be able to become a popular film within its own respective audience. Its strong story line, and character development appeals to those of an older age group, and its content of a lot of blood and gore appeals to a younger predominantly male audience. In conclusion, the media audience for this product would not necessarily be wide but it would however be a very loyal fan base.
